Time. It fills everyday. Our lives revolve around it and through it. We moan about it, we wish for it. Yet, what is it? To give it one simple definition is something that has made even intellectuals scratch their heads. Some view time as part of the basic structure of life and the universe, that in time things happen in a sequence. Others believe that time is not an entity or a happening, that it cannot be measured.
Most people, however, would agree that although we know that a minute holds sixty seconds and an hour has sixty minutes, time has a very subjective quality associated with it. It is closely linked to our emotions. Waiting for the bus to arrive can make a few minutes feel like an hour especially if you are running late, while the opposite is true when one does not want a period of time to pass too quickly. Then a week-end of forty-eight hours plus can seem as if it passed in the blink of an eye.
Whether you view time scientifically or philosophically, we all are subjected to its passing. Some of us view it as a gift, while others view it as a curse. It cannot be bought, nor can it be given away or even captured. It cannot be unspent or re-spent.
Sometimes we perceive time as a tormentor, when old age is prolonged beyond our understanding. When time granted is short, we feel it is playing a cruel trick on us and it leaves us with unanswered questions, yet to the butterfly those few hours of life is enough for it to fulfill its life's purpose with such an abundance of joy that it leaves us enthralled.
To me, every moment of time is precious, but even so I find it impossible to engrave every moment in my memory. What a blessing photographs are! However, I wish that I could have captured not only the special moments, but also those ordinary mundane moments, those real life moments that link the special moments together. Little butterfly moments. I would keep them in a viewing jar. How wonderful it would be to every now and again slip into my viewing jar and relive some of those snatches of time. The first time my parents looked at me, the nights my dad tucked me in. The coffee-fresh mornings in the game park when the day just awoke. The day my mom sang at my wedding - what a surprise! Those moments of silly laughter with my sister in the mall, the day she took me to the library. The first day I held my children in my arms, bundling them up against all the sharpness of the world, their first smiles. Crossing the street, holding onto their tiny, trusting little hands. My husband's first look of adoration, the early morning warmth of his embrace. All those days he would make the people around him laugh. The endless days of play with my brother. The special times when I helped bath my little nephew, now a grown man. The last day I saw my dad, just so I can have a chance to say all the things I never did. The day my friend and I sat on a street corner, painting the sunrise. Those cold winter days when my mom would fetch me from school and we would go get warm pies from the old bakery. These are but a few.
How precious our memories are, and over time they become more so. That is surely why the old folk speak about "The Good 'ole Days" even though they were often times of hardship. Time has a way to glorify even the worst of times and the worst of sinners. Time, elusive as it might appear at times, is a healing balm and a reflecting mirror. What moments would you like to keep in a viewing jar? How about sharing them with us here on my blog?

Forgive Yesterday
Today I want to talk about Yesterday. The Beatles sing "Oh, I believe in yesterday", while David Guetta says "I got no use for yesterday".
Whichever song you sing, Yesterday is a fact, and it is a part of our lives . Our photo albums are filled with yesterdays. Precious moments captured, happy smiles and memorable events. In between each snapshot are hundreds of unrecorded yesterday moments. We cannot change any of our yesterdays, nor can we live there, and like it or not, yesterday has an impact on each one of us. However, we can decide what impact we are going to allow our yesterdays to have on our lives today. In fact, quite often it is this decision that has a direct effect on the quality of our happiness today.
Let's take a closer look at Yesterday. Yesterday started out as a beautiful and perfect day just like today. It had all the potential of today, yet stuff happened during the day, some of it wonderful, some exciting and some of it unpleasant., but one thing about yesterday - it had just 24 hours. Try as we might, we cannot re-live those 24 hours, we do not get a do-over, or a play-again. No amount of regret, remorse or resentment can change what happened during those 24 hours. Not even when we spend all of today's 24hours on re-living or re-thinking what happened yesterday, can we change a single thing about yesterday. Good or bad, joyful or sad, it is done and dusted. We can paste the memories in an album, we can count the scars or the gold stars, we can tick the day off on a calender and we can learn from yesterday, but we cannot alter it. Yet, that is what most of us do. We feverishly hold onto yesterday and all its moments. We worry about every decision we made, agitate over every action we took and in the process, we end up with a half-lived today which leads to yet more regrets.
It is time to forgive yesterday. Look at it for what it is. It is a day made up out of a mixture of good and bad, happy and sad moments. It may be filled with precious memories or just a few little moments of everyday things to treasure, it may also have some moments in it that we never want to repeat again. It also has lessons to be learned from, opportunities for growth and enlightenment for our days ahead. So, learn from it, remember the wonderful moments, but also forgive it and forgive yourself!
Make a decision that 2015 will be the year where yesterday will no longer ruin today or rule over tomorrow. Yesterday is a series of photographs in your memory book, but it is no longer a banner across your life, you are not your past, you are, however, the decisions you make about your past.
May you have the courage to embrace this day and LIVE it!!!
Anything to share? Please drop us a note, we would love to hear your voice here on the blog.
Blessings!!!

Time for Tea
When I think of tea, I automatically think of my sister. Tea time is not merely the consumption of a beverage, it is an event. It is the delicate removal of the finest china from the tea cupboard, laying the tea table and brewing the perfect pot of strong, yet delicate tea, and serving it just right, cups pre-heated and the milk poured first. What accompanies the tea is only slightly less importance for the simple reason that even the most ordinary fare becomes a delicacy when accompanied by my sister's tea.
However, the most special thing about tea time at my sister's is the feeling of camaraderie, of togetherness, of belonging. It is like coming home.
Tea time is a time of sharing, laughter, the baring of souls, a time of giving advice, receiving the same and reminiscing. Tea time is a time of reconnecting. Often tea time can stretch over several hours. Sometimes we start teatime off still in our pyjamas, but it is always served in a delicate teapot perfectly prepared. I love these times, and although I am more of a coffee drinker (the instant type) , I miss my sister's tea for nothing. It is a tradition.
Today people equate the word "tradition" with "old-fashioned". Many people sneer at the word "tradition", yet traditions are like the thread that keep the different blocks of a quilt together. They are passed on from one generation to the next, from one family to the next. When people gather for special events or occassions, they provide common ground and tie people together that might not have seen each other for years. It gives a sense of unity to families. It strengthens the bond between the generations. It gives every individual a sense of belonging to something greater than themselves.
Whatever your tradition is, it is precious, and worth celebrating. Traditions are what makes families unique. They are the building blocks of future generations.
What traditions do you have that are special to you and your family? I hope you would share them here with us. Be proud of them and tell the world. Please feel free to comment here, I am looking forward to hearing from you.
